What is caregiver burnout?

A state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion experienced by people who care for an aging or ill family member, often resulting from prolonged stress without adequate support or relief.

Caregiver burnout affects an estimated 40-70% of the 53 million unpaid caregivers in the United States. Symptoms include chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, irritability, withdrawal from friends and activities, and declining physical health. The primary driver is the relentless nature of caregiving — there is no "off switch." Adult children caring for aging parents are especially vulnerable because they often juggle caregiving with work, their own families, and financial pressures. Research consistently shows that regular respite — even brief daily breaks from the emotional weight of caregiving — significantly reduces burnout risk.
